I serve as the director of HEPCAT, the DOE-funded High Energy Physics Consortium for Advanced Training that comprises 8 University of California Campuses, Stanford, Cal Tech, and 5 national laboratories.

Training the next generation High Energy Physics instrumentalists

Mission

Breakthroughs in science are invariably the result of novel measurement capabilities. Indeed, the invention of radically new technologies often arises out of attempts to probe beyond the known, and leads to advances in the hands of visionary scientists. It is difficult to think of a major discovery in particle physics that was made using off-the-shelf instruments. This deep culture of innovation in High Energy Physics (HEP) is under threat as many of the scientists involved in detector R&D are reaching the end of their careers. New cohorts of students have had limited exposure to the complete cycle of conceptual design, prototyping, testing, fabricating, commissioning, and calibrating complex instruments. The mission of this consortium is to renew this critical workforce by training new students in instrumentation for HEP. The consortium is supported by Department of Energy, Office of High Energy Physics (award number: DE-SC0022313).
